Assistance and Wireless Alarm Units

Merlinia Assistance support for wireless alarm units

There can be situations where pressing a key on the PC keyboard is not suitable as a way of requesting assistance. Nor pressing both mouse buttons, even on a mouse (possibly wireless) mounted under a tabletop. In these cases the best solution may be a small wireless alarm unit.

These wireless alarm units are originally intended for a different purpose - they are sold as a way of locking a PC when the person carrying the unit goes more than 3-4 meters away from the PC. They typically cost $30-$40, including the USB receiver unit that is needed for their operation.

How it works

First you install the USB receiver on the PC, and configure Assistance Client to recognize this device. Then the employee only needs to remain within the 3-4 meter range of the unit. If he/she feels threatened he/she simply presses the button on the alarm unit and Assistance generates a request for assistance, the same as if the employee had activated Assistance from the keyboard or mouse.

Each wireless alarm unit has a unique digital identity, so there is no problem if employees who work close to each other each has a unit - Assistance can tell which unit has generated the alarm. It is also possible to "register" multiple wireless units to one PC in situations where a PC located in a meeting room is used by several employees.

Small enough to be hidden and discrete enough that it doesn't matter

It's 3.5 cm in diameter and 1.3 cm thick. Carry it in your pocket or hanging from a strap around your neck. Or hide it in a key pouch or glasses case or whatever.
